Causes of Dandruff

Know and understand the causes of that itchy, flaky scalp.

What is Dandruff and What Causes It

What is dandruff and what causes it? Dandruff is a common scalp condition marked by white or yellowish flakes of dead skin cells. Dandruff doesn’t discriminate and can affect people of all ages, though it’s more frequent in men and people with oily skin.

Most of us don’t think about the skin all over our body constantly renewing itself by shedding skin cells – including the skin on our heads. Dandruff occurs when scalp shedding of the skin cells goes into overdrive. Dandruff has several different causes, and though it can be persistent, it’s usually an easy condition to treat. NIZORAL® treats the cause of dandruff and provides long-lasting relief from scalp flaking, itching, and dryness.

Simple causes:

Dry Skin Dandruff Cause

Dry skin. The most common dandruff cause is simply dry skin, especially in the winter. If the flakes you see are small and not overly oily, or you’re also experiencing dry skin on other parts of the body, this may be the reason you are suffering from dandruff.

Shampoo Hair for Healthy Scalp

Not shampooing enough. Oil and skin cells can build up if hair isn’t washed regularly, causing it to shed in dandruff pieces. Make sure to maintain a healthy hair and scalp routine by regularly cleansing hair.

Hair Products Causing Dandruff

Hair products. Sometimes ingredients in different hair care products or dyes can cause sensitivity, or simply irritate and dry out your scalp, causing more scalp issues and potentially lead to dandruff.

Other causes:

Seborrheic Dermatitis Dandruff

Seborrheic Dermatitis. This irritated, oily skin condition is frequently a cause of more severe dandruff. Greasy, reddened skin and yellow or white flakes are markers for this condition, which can also affect the sides of your nose, eyebrows, behind the ears, groin and sometimes armpits. A doctor must diagnose this condition.

Malessezia and Dandruff

Malessezia. This is a yeast-like fungus that lives quietly on most of us, but occasionally it grows out of control, especially on those with oily skin. It irritates the scalp which causes additional skin cell growth, and extra shedding.

Scalp Eczema and Psoriasis

Some skin conditions or illnesses. Skin conditions like eczema or psoriasis, along with illnesses such as Parkinson’s disease can make people more prone to dandruff.
